definition

Live cells with intact membranes have the ability to exclude dyes that easily penetrate dead or damaged cells. Examples of the dyes include propidium iodide, 7-amino actinomycin D, and trypan blue. Cells stained with the former two can be quantified by flow cytometry, while the latter is by manual counting using hemocytometer.
